anthropic/claude-opus-4-8

Closed

Claude Opus 4.8 is a model in Anthropic's Opus line, for tasks where extended reasoning, large-context analysis and output quality justify a higher price per token. It lists at $5.00 input and $25.00 output per 1M tokens, with a 1M-token window.

Does Member pay for itself on Claude Opus 4.8?

Member costs $199 a year. At list price, a Member Private key saves $0.25 per 1M input tokens and $1.25 per 1M output tokens. It pays for itself at about $3,980 a year ($332 a month) of Claude Opus 4.8 spend at list price.

At $5.00 per 1M input tokens that is about 796M input tokens a year, or 66M a month, counting input only. Output tokens cost 5Γ— as much per token, so a workload with long answers gets there sooner.

  • Member ($199 a year) pays for itself once your Claude Opus 4.8 spend at list price passes $332 a month with a Private key (about 33M tokens at a 3:1 input-to-output mix) or $166 a month with Research Share.
  • Executive ($1,999 a year) costs less than Member above $1,500 a month (Private keys), about 150M tokens a month.

100M tokens a month at 3 input : 1 output is $1,000 a month at list price.

At this volume Member Β· Research Share saves $83.42 a month against list price.

What Claude Opus 4.8 is best at

Complex multi-step reasoning

Legal analysis, financial modelling and system design often need many constraints weighed at once before an answer. That is the work teams usually reserve an Opus-class model for, and the price per token reflects it; route the simpler steps to a lower-priced model.

Large-document review with high-stakes output

With a 1M-token window, a whole contract set, specification or research corpus can go into one request. Long requests are not cheap at this tier: 250,000 input tokens cost about $1.25 at list, before the answer.

Code architecture and refactoring

Architecture reviews and large refactors need a model to reason about design patterns, dependencies and trade-offs across a system. A common split is Claude Opus 4.8 for the review and Claude Sonnet 4.6 (40% cheaper than Claude Opus 4.8 on input) for implementation and iteration.

  • vs Claude Sonnet 4.6: Claude Sonnet 4.6 costs $3.00 per 1M input tokens at list, 40% cheaper than Claude Opus 4.8. For coding agents and tool-use pipelines, start with the lower-priced model and switch when your evals show it falling short.

For security, abuse prevention and debugging we store request and response content, encrypted, and delete it after 30 days; error details may be kept longer. We also keep usage details (model, tokens, cost, latency, status and time). The model provider may keep requests briefly for abuse monitoring under its own terms.

Research Share: available. Opt in per key and pay less. Data from that key will be used to accelerate AGI and supplied to top frontier labs for AGI purposes, and only for traffic after you opt in.
